Fire
Department Receives Grant Money to Enhance Firefighter Safety
Release Date: June 22, 2009
Karol Sole, President,
and Robert Wachsmuth, President Elect, representing the Chicago Chapter
of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers presented to
Hanover Park Village President Rodney S. Craig and Fire Chief Craig A.
Haigh a check in the amount of $1,000 ($500 from the Chicago Chapter and
$500 from the National Academy of Certified Hazardous Material
Managers).
The Hanover Park Fire
Department also received a $2,000 grant from the Sam’s Club Community
Grant Program. Brandon Smith and Belinda Mustafa from Sam’s Club
presented the check to Fire Chief Craig Haigh.
The funds received from
the Certified Hazmat Materials Managers and Sam's Club will be utilized
to purchase and re-supply the Fire Corps rehab vehicle with the
restocking of perishable supplies.
An average of 100 U.S. firefighters die annually in the line of duty.
45% - 50% of these deaths are due to cardiac related events that are
triggered by heat stress associated with fire suppression and the
utilization of chemical protective suits. The heat stress impacting
firefighters causes massive dehydration, substantially elevated core
body temperatures, reductions in cardiac output and changes in the
body’s electrolytes and chemical processes. The detrimental effects of
heat stress can be minimized through on-scene rehabilitation that
focuses on core body temperature cooling, rehydration, medical
monitoring, rest, and calorie replacement.
In an effort to assist the Fire Department, the Hanover Park Fire Corps
members are providing on-scene firefighter rehabilitation. Existing and
new Fire Corps members complete an intensive 24-hour University of
Illinois Fire Service Institute training program focused on:
The physical and physiological stress of firefighting.
Working with the Fire Service.
Techniques for implementing effective on-scene rehabilitation.
Firefighter protective equipment.
Experiencing heat stress from the firefighter’s perspective.
Fire Corps members who complete the training staff the Fire Department
Rehab Vehicle and respond to major incidents to assist the department.

Hanover
Park Firefighters Participate in Life Saving Research
Release Date: June 22, 2009
Approximately 100 of our nation’s firefighters die annually in the
line of duty and 60,000 – 80,000 are injured. Many of the deaths are
caused due to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular problems.
The University of Illinois Firefighter Life Safety Research Center,
part of the Fire Service Institute/State Fire Academy, has spent the
last 16 years studying the impact of heat stress on the heart, brain,
and vascular systems. Firefighters suffer extremes of heat stress due
to the heavy work performed; the temperatures in buildings that are on
fire, the protective clothing worn as well as their own personal fitness
and hydration levels. Firefighters routinely encounter ceiling
temperatures at or near 1,000 degrees with floor temperatures between
200 to 400 degrees.
Using federal funds garnered through the Assistance to Firefighters
Grant Program the University of Illinois is currently studying
firefighters to evaluate their cardiovascular response to heat stress.
Firefighters are asked to participate in live fire training evolutions
inside the academy's burn buildings where their core body temperature is
electronically monitored as well as their heart rate. Immediately
following the training they undergo a cardiac ultrasound, have blood
drawn to check clotting factors, measure the elasticity of their
arteries, and evaluate their hydration levels.
Doctors Denise Smith and Gavin Horn of the Firefighter Life Safety
Research Center are coordinating the research project assisted by Craig
A. Haigh, Fire Chief of the Hanover Park Fire Department.
Hanover Park firefighters have been an integral part of the process
from the beginning. Firefighters from Burlington, Elgin, Fox River
Grove, Glenside and Itasca also participated in the weekend study.
Members of the Hanover Park Fire Corps have been on hand throughout the
testing to provide hydration, cooling and nourishment. Another round of
testing is scheduled for August 8 and 9. Chief Haigh will again be
leading this training assisted by a number of Hanover Park Fire
Department instructors and trainers.
Dr. Smith states “the knowledge gained from this research will
without question save firefighters' lives.” Chief Haigh believes it
will not only save lives but will also save valuable taxpayer dollars.
“As a department, we are proud to participate in this ground breaking
research that will not only affect Hanover Park but the fire service
worldwide.”

Red Light enforcement cameras at the busy
intersection of Lake Street and Barrington Road will be activated at

have been posted in the intersections to deter drivers from running red
lights.
Warning Period - Motorists who violate a red
light at the intersection over the next 14 days will receive warning
notices instead of monetary fines.
Enforcement - Monetary fines will begin
being assessed at 12:01 on June 30th. The system captures violations,
matches license plates to the Department of Motor Vehicles records,
issues citations and collects fines. The entire process will be funded
by fines that violators pay to the village.
Amber Alert Feature - This feature enables
the police department to search in real time for wanted or suspect
vehicles at any intersection with the village’s network of cameras. When
a suspect vehicle passes thru the intersection, the system, created by
Gatso USA, immediately reports the information to the police department.

Hanover Park Celebrates Arbor Day and Tree City USA
Award
Release Date: April 10, 2009
Hanover Park has been named a Tree City
USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. This is the 24th
consecutive year Hanover Park has received this national recognition.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored
by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest
Service and the National Association of State Foresters. To become
a Tree City USA, a community must have the following four standards: a
tree board or department, a city tree ordinance, a comprehensive
community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.
“Across America, people are recognizing
and celebrating how vital trees are to our cities and towns,” said John
Rosenow, Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundations. “Trees help
reduce peak demand by conserving energy. They also clean the air and
water, increase property value and make our homes more comfortable,
livable places. Tree City USA designation recognizes the work of elected
officials, staff and citizens who plan and care for the community
forest. Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our
cities and towns, and provide environmental and economical benefits.
A community, and its citizens, that recognize these benefits and provide
needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks.”

Hanover Park Police Department
Announces
Part 1 Crime Rate Drops To
An All-Time Low
Release Date: January
26, 2009
The Hanover Park Police Department would like to announce that the
crime rate for Part 1 crime in Hanover Park has dropped to an all-time
low in 2008. Part 1 crime is the benchmark used by the FBI to determine
crime rates in cities and villages. Chief Ron Moser attributes the
reduction in crime to the police department focusing its efforts toward
this goal. “Reducing crime was our number one priority this year. Our
already low crime rate, dropped once again.”
In 2007, the police department won the Illinois Municipal League
Innovation Award for how the department staff meetings allocate
personnel and resources to solve problems. The staff meeting format was
featured in “Law and Order” magazine. This process was used to identify
the correlation between late night crime, juveniles out after curfew and
their impact on crime in Hanover Park. It also identified more
comprehensive follow-up investigation was needed on all Part I crime.
At the beginning of 2008, the police department’s strategy was to put
officers in problem areas focusing on field contacts and curfew
violators. The department also restructured the Investigations Division
identifying that more thorough investigations correlated into criminals
being taken off the street quicker and not being able to repeat offend.
At the end of 2008, Robberies dropped 32%, Thefts were down 9% and
graffiti incidents were down 30%. The department experienced two
homicides in November and both were quickly resolved with the arrests of
the offenders.
