Back to TopHanover Park Celebrates Arbor Day
and Tree City USA Award
April 23, 2001
Immediate Release

Hanover Park has been named a Tree City USA by The National Arbor Day Foundation. This is the 16th consecutive year Hanover Park has received this national recognition.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. To become a Tree City USA, a community must have the following four standards: a tree board or department, a city tree ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.

"Trees make a world of difference in our communities," said John Rosenow, The National Arbor Day Foundation’s president. "Trees have long been recognized for the beauty and value they lend to our homes, neighborhoods, parks, and business areas. At the same time, those trees conserve energy, help clean the air, protect rivers and streams, and provide a home for wildlife in our towns and cities. An effective community forestry program is an ongoing process of renewal and improvement; a program of tree planting and care that continues through the years, The Tree City USA award is an excellent indication that there is a solid foundation for that process of improvement."

This year, the Village is planning an Arbor Day Ceremony on April 27th at 1:00 PM at Village Hall. A northern red oak tree will be planted in memory of Police Department Community Service Officer Bryan Walter who suffered a heart attack while on duty last November and subsequently passed away.

The Village will also plant a red oak tree at Spring Wood Middle School in conjunction with the graduating eighth grade class. The Village has donated the tree and the Spring Wood students will raise money to be donated to the National Arbor Day Foundation. The tree will be dedicated at 1:30 PM on Arbor Day on the Spring Wood campus.

Back to TopHanover Park Announces Drop in Crime Rate
March 27, 2001
Immediate Release

Chief Ron Moser of the Hanover Park Police Department is pleased to announce that the 2000 Hanover Park Crime Rate decreased 7% from the prior year. This reflects the lowest level ever recorded in Hanover Park since the department began reporting to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report in 1974 And, it comes on the heels of a 27% decrease in 1999.

The Crime Rate is the number of Part I Crimes (the eight most serious categories of crime) per 100,000 residents. The Village recorded 857 Part I Crimes and a population of 38,278 in 2000, versus 862 offenses, with a population of 35,579, in 1999. The corresponding crime rates are 2239 and 2426 respectively. (It should be noted that the 2000 population is a preliminary report from the US Census Bureau, and subject to adjustment).

The number of Part II Crimes, which includes misdemeanors and crimes other than Part I offenses, fell 7% in 2000, again following a 7% reduction in 1999.

Chief Moser credits and thanks the officers and civilians of the department, along with our Village residents, for these dramatic decreases.

The chart below, detailing the increases and decreases in crime in Hanover Park over the last 26 years, is available on disk at the Hanover Park Police Department.
