Back to Top Christmas Tree Recycling Program
Release Date: December 16, 2002
Immediate

Christmas trees will be recycled throughout the Village on Saturday, December 28th and Saturday, January 4th. BFI Waste Systems, the Village’s residential scavenger, will be recycling the Christmas trees.

To participate in the program, place your Christmas tree in the parkway and follow these simple guidelines:

  • Do not put trees in plastic bags as they will not be recycled.
  • Remove all decorations including lights, garland, tinsel and metal (for example, nails). Be sure to remove the stand.
  • Dispose of artificial or natural wreaths in the regular household garbage.
  • Do not place artificial trees out for recycling.

The Village requests your cooperation in setting your tree out only on the two dates previously listed. However, if you miss the special collection dates, BFI Waste Systems or your scavenger will collect Christmas trees with regular garbage and refuse collection.

This service is also being provided to the homeowner associations who are not regularly serviced by BFI Waste Systems.

If you have questions, call the Village (630) 372-4210 or BFI Waste Systems at (630) 469-1036.

Back to Top Village of Hanover Park Issues $5,210,000 of General Obligation Bonds
Release Date: December 9, 2002
Immediate

The Hanover Park Village Board approved the issuance of $5,210,000 of General Obligation Bonds at the December 5 Board meeting. Similar to refinancing a home, the Village of Hanover Park issued lower interest rate general obligation bonds, ranging from 2.00% to 3.50% to refund the outstanding higher interest rate 1996 General Obligation Bonds ranging from 5.00% to 5.125%.

Village of Hanover Park’s Aa3 Bond Rating Reaffirmed

As part of issuing these General Obligation Bonds, a credit rating was obtained from Moody’s Investors Service. Moody’s Investors Service is a national credit rating agency that examines the credit worthiness of bond issues from cities and villages in the United States as well as foreign countries.

Moody’s reaffirmed the Village’s present Aa3 credit rating. The Village’s credit rating was upgraded from A1 to Aa3 in 2001. The Aa3 credit rating means that only 12% of cities and villages with outstanding general obligation debt in the United States have a higher credit rating than the Village of Hanover Park.

In their recent credit review, Moody’s cites the Village’s well-managed financial operations, moderate direct debt burden, and aggressive retirement of its general obligation bonds.

What Does This Mean to the Citizens of Hanover Park?

A high credit rating on the Village of Hanover Park’s general obligation bonds issue will result in lower interest costs to repay these bonds. Lower costs will benefit the property taxpayers in the Village of Hanover Park. Higher credit rating means a better credit risk to the buyer of the Village’s General Obligation Bonds.

This bond refunding will result in future cost savings, when compared to the bonds being refunded, ranging from $41,000 to $45,000 per year or over $388,000 over the life of the new bond issue. These bonds will be paid in full by December 2011. Since general obligation bonds are paid by property taxes, fewer property tax dollars will now be required to pay for this debt.

If you have further questions, please contact Harry Sakai, Finance Director at (630) 372-4231.

Back to Top Fire Department Hopes to "Keep the Wreath Red"
Release Date: December 3, 2002
Immediate

The Hanover Park Fire Department is participating in the annual Fire Chief's Association holiday fire safety program known as "Keep the Wreath Red." This program promotes fire safety during the holiday season. Each of Hanover Park's two fire stations currently have wreaths made up of red lights. For every holiday-related fire, a red bulb will be replaced with a white bulb to remind residents of the dangers posed by unsafe holiday decorations. Let's work together to "keep the wreath red" in Hanover Park and enjoy a safe and happy holiday season. Here are a few tips to help you keep your home safe:

Christmas Trees

Real trees should be checked for freshness. Fresh trees are bright green with needles that are hard to pull from branches when bent between your fingers. Fresh needles do not break if the tree is bounced on the ground, a minimum number should fall off. The trunk should be sticky with resin.

To keep your tree fresh, cut off about two inches of the trunk to expose fresh wood. This allows better absorption of water. Keep the stand filled with water. Make sure the tree is kept away from heat sources, like fireplaces or heat vents, and out of the way of traffic. When needles start to fall, get rid of the tree.

Lights

Check lights before placing them on the tree. Look out for worn or frayed wires, broken bulbs, loose prongs, and cracked or broken sockets. Make sure lights have been tested and have a "UL" (Underwriters Laboratories) label. Place them across a table and plug them in for 10 to 15 minutes. Check for smoking or melting. Avoid overloading extension cords or light strings.

Candles

Keep candles away from other flammable decorations. Keep candles in nonflammable holders. Do not leave lit candles in an unattended room.

Fireplaces

Make sure the fireplace has been cleaned and inspected. Start fires with kindling and wooden matches. Do not use the fireplace as an incinerator for burning holiday waste.

Nothing is more appealing than a room filled with Christmas decorations and a glimmering fireplace. That is also a dangerous combination that must be monitored carefully.

Smoke Detectors

Make sure that your smoke detectors are working properly.
