Our Mission, Our Vision and Our Accomplishments

Our Mission

To achieve excellence in fire prevention and emergency service by maintaining the highest standards in education, training and dedication and believing in the honor, sacrifice and duty of our calling so that we will provide the highest degree of safety and security to our community.

Our Vision

To be recognized by our community and employees as an organization that:

  • Is responsive to our community’s needs and concerns.
  • Is a model of excellence in providing emergency services in the Village.
  • Is dedicated to continuous improvement in the services we provide.
  • Fosters an environment of trust and involvement of our members and the community.

Fire Chief Craig A. Haigh

The Officers and Firefighters of Hanover Park Fire Department continually strive to embody the mission and values of our organization. Quality compassionate service provided at times of great need to our residents and visitors is a mainstay of our department; while making incremental steps to improve our ability to meet the ever-changing needs of our diverse community.

Our department responded to 2,672 incidents in 2006 with 70.5% of those being Rescue and Emergency Medical Services. Paramedics contacted 2,148 patients and provided advanced life support care to 1,050. We also handled 30 building fires within the Village and District boundaries and responded to 363 calls for assistance outside our community; 44 of these being reported structural fires.

The department houses and transports MABAS Division 12 Haz Mat Trailer 2, which responds to all communities within the division, on interdivisional requests and as part of the MABAS state and national response taskforce. The department also provides hazardous material technicians and decontamination services to MABAS Division 2 and 12. Members work jointly with the Village’s Police Department to oversee the Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT) and provide fire/arson investigators to the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force. Fire and life safety education as well as training in CPR, First Aid and use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) is provided to the general public and area health care providers. Department instructors served as invited speakers at the Illinois Women in the Fire Service Conference, IFSI Fire College, IFSI Explorer/Cadet Fire College, the Illinois Association of Firefighters Conference, the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC), and the International Association of Fire Chief’s – Fire Rescue International.

The department maintains an aggressive training program involving educational opportunities consisting of in-house drills, EMS Continuing Education sponsored by the Greater Elgin Mobile Intensive Care Program, along with training programs at or sponsored by the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute, the National Fire Academy, and MABAS Divisions 2 and 12.

Several noteworthy accomplishments were completed in 2006 with the major components listed as follows:

  • Completed construction of the new Headquarters Fire Station at 6850 Barrington Road and opened the facility in July.
  • Received $300,000 in federal money through the “Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response” (SAFER) grant which subsequently allowed an increase in full time strength from 32 to 35 employees.
  • Received in excess of $78,000 from the 2006 Federal FEMA grant used to replace full and part-time employees’ turnout gear.
  • Developed specifications, purchased and placed in-service a new MedTec Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance at Fire Station No. 1.
  • Developed specifications, purchased and placed in-service a new Chevrolet Suburban Command Vehicle for use by the Assistant Fire Chief.
  • Completed a Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) program enabling all fire department apparatus to receive computer aided dispatch information.
  • Signed a five year collective bargaining agreement between the Village of Hanover Park and SEIU Local 73.
  • Tested and certified a 2-year Battalion Chief’s promotional list.
  • Tested and certified a 2-year Firefighter eligibility list.

Overall, 2006 has been a productive year with significant advancements achieved in the services provided to our residents.

I extend my personal thanks to Acting Village President Packham and the Village Board, Village Manager Marc Hummel, Village Staff, Battalion Chiefs Zaccard, Ames and Larsen, Company Officers and Firefighters of the Hanover Park Fire Department, including our administrative assistant Robin Dubiel, for their dedication and commitment to promoting the mission and values of our great organization.

Sincerely,

Craig A. Haigh
Fire Chief
