Village Receives Federal
Grant for Staffing
The Village of Hanover Park was awarded the federal Staffing for
Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant in June 2006.
The purpose of the SAFER grant is to award funds directly to
volunteer, combination, and career fire departments to help the
departments increase their cadre of firefighters. Ultimately, the goal
is for SAFER grantees to enhance their ability to attain or enhance
24-hour staffing and thus assuring their communities have adequate
protection from fire and fire-related hazards.
The grant valued at $300,000 will be paid out over the next four
years and will cover the partial cost of three new Firefighter /
Paramedics. The grant requires the Village of Hanover Park to match an
increasing proportion of the salary over a four-year period, and in the
fifth year of the grant, the Village must absorb the entire cost of the
new positions.
The national standard that SAFER grants help to address is the
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1710 Standard for the
Organization and Deployment of Fire Suppression Operations, Emergency
Medical Operations, and Special Operations to the Public by Career Fire
Department.
