The Hanover Park Fire Department operates from two fire stations with
shift personnel working a 24/48 schedule. On-duty personnel begin shift
at 7:00 am each morning and are on-duty until relieved by the oncoming
shift at 7:00 am the next day. Shift personnel then have 48 hours off
before they are required to report for their next 24 hour shift.
Shift personnel are divided into three battalions with each shift
being led by a Battalion Chief. Each shift also has a Lieutenant
assigned to the engine company at both Station 1 and Station 2.
On-duty personnel staff two engine companies, two ambulance
companies, and a command car or “buggy.” The department’s Tower
Ladder is staffed as a “jump company” with firefighter/paramedics from
the Station 1 ambulance.
Overall operation of the Fire Department is under the command of the
Fire Chief who reports to the Village Manager. The Assistant Fire Chief
is second in the chain of command and serves as the department’s Fire
Marshal.
Part-Time Firefighters
The Hanover
Park Fire Department employs a staff of part time firefighters who are
used to fill full time vacancies due to vacation, Kelly Days, sick leave
and leave for training. Part time personnel are required to possess
certification as a Firefighter II and Emergency Medical Technician –
Basic. Many part time personnel are Licensed Paramedics as well as Haz
Mat Technicians, Fire Apparatus Engineers, and Technical Rescue
Specialists.
Part time firefighters are required to bid two 12 hour
shifts per week and are assigned based on departmental needs. Part time
shifts run from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 7:00 am. Shifts can be
married together to allow a part time employee to work a 24 hour shift.

Each "Chief Officer" is assigned a division in addition to their
shift assignments. As the division head they are responsible to the Fire
