Crime Prevention
The following programs
are offered through the Crime Prevention Bureau.

Neighborhood
Watch: Gets neighborhoods organized by raising their awareness
level of suspicious activity and how to properly report it to the
Police Department. Helps keep property values up and crime down.

Elderly crime: Topics discussed are crimes that are
directed at seniors and the methods seniors can utilize to prevent
these crimes from occurring.

Bicycle safety: Taught in conjunction with the Officer
Friendly Program with an emphasis on Rules of the Road and the safe
way to ride a bicycle.

Bicycle Registration: The Crime Prevention Unit offers
free bike registration at different locations throughout the community
during the spring and summer months. Any resident of Hanover Park may
also register their bike at the Police Department at any other time.

Residential security surveys: This program utilizes
Crime Prevention Officers by inspecting homes to make them less
vulnerable to burglaries. The officer and resident inspect both the
interior and exterior of the home, and the officer makes suggestions
to reduce the opportunity of a burglary.

Business security survey: Similar to the residential
security survey, officers specially trained in environmental design
and security techniques assist businesses in making their stores less
prone to theft and robbery.

Stranger Danger: A national program taught at the
elementary school level to children in the Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd
grades on how to say "No" and get away from strangers.

Rape prevention: This program deals with the traumatic
effects of a physical assault on a woman. The program concentrates on
the ways to be safe, how to spot a possible area where an assault
could occur, and the understanding of the procedures used to gain
evidence. This program is presented with a rape counselor present to
answer questions.

Ride Along Program: Citizens may ride with the Police
once a year for up to eight hours to see Hanover Park from the eyes of
a Police Officer.

Safety Tips for Women: A presentation about various
measures women can take to prevent a purse snatching or sexual
assault.

Operation Identification: An engraving pen is loaned
out free of charge to mark valuables with your drivers license number.
It promotes security through identification of property.

Police Departments Tours: A 45-minute guided tour of
the Police Station for small groups.
The Crime Prevention unit also may send a speaker to
address an array of topics. The Crime Prevention Unit is involved with
the following activities: National Night Out, COPS Day picnics, Holiday
Lights Tour and Safety Seat Inspections. For more information about
