Power outages during the summer are more likely to occur during severe weather events, such as strong thunderstorms and tornadoes.
Here are some tips to keep your family safe and comfortable during and after a storm:
- Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. A refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer will stay a safe temperature for about 48 hours.
- Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and at least 20 feet away from building openings such as windows, doors or garages.
- Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
- Have a plan for keeping medication cool and to power any medical devices.
- Keep mobile phones and electronic equipment charged before a power outage.
- If safe, go to an alternate location for heating or cooling. Check out the list of Warming and Cooling Centers available in Hanover Park and the surrounding area.
