What does the Stimulus Package Mean for My Business?

Federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES)

Congress has passed the  Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES)  which includes assistance for individuals, employers, non-profits, and local governments:

  • Paycheck Protection Program Loans
  • Small Business Debt Relief Program
  • Economic Injury Disaster Loans and Emergency Economic Injury Grants
  • Small Business Counseling
  • Small Business Contracting
  • Small Business Tax Provisions.

This FAQ document compiled by the US Senate and this summary from the US Chamber of Commerce will help you get started on understanding the CARES act. The US Chamber is working to bring you the best resources, weekly virtual town halls, and other information to help you navigate this challenging time. Start Here for their complete menu of information.  Specific programs are outlined here:

  • Payroll Protection Program (PPP) -  The Chamber has produced a  guide explaining the new emergency loans available for small businesses and 501(c)3 non-profits, known as the Paycheck Protection Program. Download a copy of the guide in English and Spanish.
  • Guide to the Emergency Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) - The CARES Act expands the Small Business Administration’s long-standing Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program (EIDL). The EIDL program was created to assist businesses, renters, and homeowners located in regions affected by declared disasters. Find out more.  The Guide is found here.

Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA or Act) requires certain employers to provide employees with paid sick leave or expanded family and medical leave for specified reasons related to COVID-19 so that employees can take necessary time to recover from COVID-19, or care for a loved one, without fear of losing their job and employers can help employees financially while navigating shutdowns.

The Department of Labor administers and enforces the new law’s paid leave requirements. Provisions will apply from the effective date through December 31, 2020 and include paid sick leave, extended leave, and a payroll tax credit to reimburse employers.  The US Chamber of Commerce has posted this Guide to FFCRA.
