Hydrant Flushing

/DocumentCenter/View/12688Residents often ask why the Village flushes fire hydrants every year. The answer is that regular hydrant flushing is a vital part of routine maintenance for the water system for these important reasons:

  • Improves water quality: Flushing removes minerals such as iron and magnesium that have collected in the water mains.
  • Improves water flow: By removing these minerals, the inside diameter of a water main is increased and therefore allows a better flow of water.
  • Hydrant maintenance: A fire hydrant is a mechanical device. The operation of a hydrant lubricates internal mechanisms and gaskets.
  • Hydrant inspection: Any deficiencies are noted and repaired as necessary to ensure that each hydrant will perform when needed for an emergency.

2026 Annual Flushing Schedule

Starting Monday, August 24, through Thursday, September 10, the Water Division will be flushing hydrants throughout the Village. Flushing will occur between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Barricades will be placed in designated areas prior to flushing. Please do not wash laundry during flushing hours, as it may cause rust staining on clothing. Residents with water softeners are encouraged to check their softeners' cycle times to ensure the units do not regenerate during this period.
